Postcards, part one!

Here are some pieces I've been making for a new gallery show I'm sharing with several other instructors at the Father Ryan Arts Center in McKee's Rocks, Pittsburgh.  Often when I think of what to make for these shows, I am first and foremost a storyteller.  Each of these pictures, I feel, hold stories within them.  These were really fun to make.  Hopefully this show will spark interest in our arts classes!  More art is on the way for the blog!  Stay tooned.

2012 Portfolio - Raw and Flawed!

Hey everyone, here is my first published portfolio, that I took with me to the November CTN trip. I learned quite a bit from the artists I met there.  To be blunt, ultimately the portfolio was a mixed bag!  There was a little bit of everything in this first one, since I was somewhat unsure about what should be included.  They pointed out how specialized things are right now when it comes to character design, layouts, storyboards, and the like.  Specifically, if I wanted a job as a character designer, the whole portfolio needed to be only character design.  It was a big turning point in my education, and the value of the experience quite outweighed the price of admission ($$ nearly two grand $$).

I was very happy then, to give copies of this first portfolio to some wonderful artists, including Tom and Tony Bancroft (who were on the other side of the partition from the Edinboro University desk at the CTN), Bill Waldman (a Warner Bros animation vet, and alum of Edinboro), Jalil Sadool (another alum who is working at Dreamworks Animation on Dragons 2), and Brian Menz (yet another alum from Edinboro, who did animation for Wreck It Ralph).

Please note the design at the edges of the "spiral bound sketchbook," It was designed for the physical book, but did not pay off, since most didn't notice it!  I'm currently working on a new and improved portfolio, and will be releasing new pages as I go along!  Stay tooned!

On the Moon... Part One

I'm back!  Sorry for the lack of updates since basically November 2012, but I'm back!  Right now, thought I'd share some conceptual thingama-whatsits with you that I'm doing for a few friends of mine.  They're working on a pretty cool scifi video game called tentatively "MOON", where your choices as the Engineer decide if everyone on a damaged moon base gets saved from a carnivorous space entity!  Above are the turnarounds for the Engineer, Little Billy (one of the NPCs) and a visual interpretation of what the game could look like.
